I recently had the honor of delivering a traditional Japanese hanging scroll to The Pokémon Company.
The scroll was created for an exhibition inspired by “Shosho,” one of Japan’s 24 solar terms, and was displayed alongside a beautiful ceramic artwork by artist Aoi Motoba.
Under the direction of Ms. Motoba and the Pokémon team, I created a scene inspired by a haiku by Matsuo Bashō associated with Shosho:
“Meigetsu no / hana ka to miete / wata batake”
The haiku evokes a cotton field illuminated by the autumn moon, appearing almost like a field of flowers. Inspired by this imagery, I depicted Monmen and a cotton field glowing beneath the moonlight, creating a dreamlike nighttime scene.
For the scroll mounting, I designed a pattern inspired by cotton flowers and the seven autumn grasses of Japan, incorporating silhouettes of Monmen and Poké Balls.
I was also inspired by chintz textiles from Bashō’s era. Each motif was hand-drawn with wax onto cotton fabric before being dyed, and I intentionally added a cracked pattern to give the textile the feeling of something aged and beautifully timeworn.
The scroll finials were specially created by Ms. Motoba. They may be difficult to see in the photographs, but they have a beautiful design reminiscent of a spool of thread.
Seeing the hanging scroll displayed alongside Ms. Motoba’s three-dimensional Monmen sculpture, the two works came together to create a single scene—a world filled with Monmen.
I am deeply moved and grateful to have been part of such a wonderful collaboration.
