I look forward to welcoming you!
This exhibition is an attempt to revisit and explore once again the unique world that can emerge through wax-resist dyeing, a world I have continually pursued throughout my artistic practice.
Until now, I have used wax-resist dyeing to express images drawn from nature. In the process, unexpected forms and phenomena have emerged by chance, giving rise to new images. Elements that appear in one work are carried into the next, where they generate something new. Through this ongoing cycle, fragments become connected, meanings and symbols emerge, and eventually an entire system and world take shape.
In reflecting on this approach to making art, I encountered Claude Lévi-Strauss’s concept of bricolage. It describes a way of thinking that involves recognizing the qualities and possibilities of the materials at hand and rearranging them within new relationships to create new meanings and systems. Looking back at my own practice through this concept, I began to recognize a strong affinity with the process I had been following, largely unconsciously, all along.
In wax-resist dyeing in particular, unpredictable phenomena arise through the interaction of materials and techniques: the movement and bleeding of dyes, the way they dry, and the resist created by wax. I read the fragments that emerge from these processes, fix them in place with wax, and carry them forward into subsequent stages of dyeing.
In this sense, rather than unilaterally designing a work, I allow a world to take shape through the phenomena that arise from the materials and techniques themselves.
For this exhibition, rather than defining a specific world in advance, I begin by generating phenomena. From there, I explore what emerges, what kinds of fragments come into being, how they form relationships with one another, and how these relationships develop into a larger system.
My ideal is for a world to emerge through an ongoing chain of transformations—from phenomena to fragments, from fragments to systems, and from systems to worlds—until, within this chain, the world begins to move of its own accord.
In this body of work, I consciously engage with this structure, allowing the world to expand all at once. What unfolds here is not the depiction of an already existing realm. It is the moment a new territory comes into being, a turning point within a world, an event at the very origin of existence.
